Sunday Sermon Series May 26, 2024

Whether you call them homilies, sermons, or talks, there’s a lot you can learn from the spiritual leaders in our community. While in a perfect world, you’d have time to listen to everyone, that simply isn’t possible for most with limited time to spare. To help, we’ve surfaced and summarized the teachings from the audio sermons of some of the most influential priests and pastors from around town and in the Christian sphere.

Fr. Mike Schmitz

At the beginning of the homily, Fr. Mike mentions the difficulty of preaching about the Trinity because it is a complex concept. He refers to it as the preacher’s nightmare.

The core message of Fr. Mike’s homily is that the Trinity is not just a concept, but rather a revelation of God’s love. God, who is one God existing in three persons – Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit – desires a relationship with us. Fr. Mike uses the analogy of a father and child to explain this relationship. He talks about how some children grow up with a distant father and how this can affect their perception of God.

Fr. Mike emphasizes that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of adoption. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we are not just servants of God, but rather His adopted children. This adoption is permanent; God will never abandon us. Fr. Mike concludes the homily by explaining how through baptism, we become sharers in the divine nature of God.

Buckhead Church

The message of the sermon is that we can have confidence in God’s word and promises. Jamie Corcoran talks about his own story of how he came to follow Jesus. He was raised in a non-religious family and was even against religion at one point. However, after a conversation with a beautiful young Brazilian woman, he began to investigate Christianity. He was surprised to learn that Jesus is more than just a religious symbol and that he is a resurrected savior.

Jamie Corcoran became a Jesus follower at the age of 16 and became a senior pastor at the age of 21. He talks about the struggles he faced as a young pastor and how he eventually refocused his church on helping people find and follow Jesus.

The sermon ends with a prayer for those who are far from God. Jamie Corcoran prays that God would draw them to himself so that they can come to know the hope, help, and healing that can only be found in Jesus.

Cathedral of Christ The King

Fr. McNamee acknowledges the difficulty in explaining the Trinity and suggests it is a mystery to be known and lived by rather than fully explained. He offers examples such as a husband knowing his wife and a parishioner knowing their priest.

Fr. McNamee talks about the importance of the Trinity in our lives. He references the three persons of the Trinity – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – and how they work together. He speaks of the Trinity as a source of love and encourages us to form loving communities like the Trinity itself.

Fr. McNamee talks about how the Trinity is revealed to us throughout our Catholic faith. He mentions the sign of the cross as an invocation of the Trinity and how every Sacrament is administered with the Trinitarian invocation. He concludes by encouraging us to live out this Trinity in unity, community, and love.

All Consuming Fire

Louie Giglio then dives into Revelation 5. He talks about a scroll with seven seals in the right hand of the one who sits on the throne. No one in heaven or on Earth is found worthy to open the scroll. An elder tells the apostle John that the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed and is able to open the scroll. A lamb is then seen standing in the center of the throne, and it takes the scroll from the right hand of the one who sits on the throne.

The four living creatures and the 24 elders fall down before the Lamb. They sing a new song, saying that the Lamb is worthy to take the scroll and open its seals because he was slain and with his blood, he purchased people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. The angels and every creature in heaven and on Earth sing praises to the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.

Louie Giglio points out that the scroll represents what is to come, and most scholars believe that the seals are already being broken. He says that God wants us to see what is happening in Revelation 5 so that it can change the way we see everything else happening around us.

Trinity Anglican Church

Pastor Dave McCune talks about Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to Jesus at night. Nicodemus didn’t understand how someone could be born again. Jesus explained that you need to be born of the Spirit to see the Kingdom of Heaven.

Dave says that eternal life is not just about living forever. It is about starting to experience God’s Kingdom now, in this life. He says that when you follow Jesus, you begin to experience healing and wholeness in all areas of your life.

Pastor Dave also talks about the idea of being snakebitten. He says that there are things in our lives that are killing us, and Jesus is the antivenom. He has paid the price for our sins, and he wants us to come to him so that he can heal us.

The sermon ends with a call to come forward for prayer. He invites anyone who is interested in learning more about Christianity or who is feeling lost or broken to come forward and receive prayer.
